How we collect consent before sending text messages.
Can You Play? is a scheduling app for organizing casual games and get-togethers — pickleball, mahjong, pickup games, hangouts, and more. Hosts invite players to games; players accept or decline. For anyone who opts in, we send game invites, reminders, and full-game confirmations by SMS in addition to email.
This is two-way messaging: invite and reminder texts can be answered directly by replying Y to accept or N to decline, in addition to responding in the app. No other inbound message content is processed or stored beyond matching a Y/N reply to that person's single pending invite.
A phone number on file is never enough on its own — a person must explicitly opt in and verify they own that number, as shown below, before any promotional or notification SMS is sent to it.

Step 1 — During account setup, the user enters their phone number and must actively turn on the consent toggle before a code can be sent.

Step 2 — A 6-digit code is sent to the number entered; the user must enter it back to prove they own that phone.

Step 3 — On a correct code, the phone number is marked verified and opt-in is recorded. Only verified, opted-in numbers ever receive game SMS.
